Innovative Packaging Preserves Wine Quality, Saves Money and Reduces Waste

September 07, 2010 – Sonoma Wine Company (SWC) now offers clients the opportunity to package their finished wine in kegs for sale and distribution. SWC, the North Coast’s leading contract wine facility, has partnered exclusively with MÁS Wine Company to provide keg filling and integrated production services to existing and new clients.

Tapping into the growing trend in Bay Area restaurants and beyond to serve wine from kegs, SWC will package clients’ wine in either stainless steel or plastic kegs in a variety of sizes. The MÁS Mini-Tank is a complete wine draft system that can easily be incorporated into a restaurant, bar, party, or special event requiring no pre-existing or new infrastructure.

“We are always exploring new ways to enhance the value that we bring to our clients,” said Natasha Granoff, Director of Business Development  “By packaging their wine in kegs, our clients will save money on materials, labels and shipping costs. Restaurateurs increasingly recognize the excellent quality of wines being offered in kegs and the advantages they bring: fewer bottles to recycle, less packaging materials, no corked bottles to return and an extended ‘shelf life’ on the bar. Consumers benefit most because all of these savings translate to better wine and a lower price.”

“Kegs provide a 10-12% margin advantage on your cost of goods after depreciation of the kegs,” observed Andy Woehl, Co-Owner of MÁS Wine Company. Offering additional incentives to use kegs, he said “although they entail an initial capital investment, there are significant long term savings since the average market life of a keg is 15 to 20 years. After only 5 or 6 uses a keg will have paid for itself and your packaging costs drop dramatically to less than $6 per 9 liters.”

Environmental benefits are equally compelling. MÁS estimates that it will save over 45,000 pounds of waste this year by not using labels, glass bottles, corks or boxes.
