Forward Thinking with “LoCA Thoughts”

21 July, 2014

Forward Thinking with “LoCA Thoughts” The Lodi Winegrape Commission’s “LoCA Thoughts” web videos aim to educate and entertain curious wine lovers   Lodi, CA – ‘Here’s a LoCA thought!’ has become a familiar catch phrase in Lodi, California and beyond, thanks to the Lodi Winegrape Commission’s popular video series, “LoCA Thoughts”. The web series features charismatic local wine grower Ben Kolber, who playfully demystifies wine while providing wine lovers with creative pairings and fun, down-to-earth solutions to some of the most common wine-related questions. The series speaks to the diversity of the grape varieties in Lodi’s wine region as well as the varied preferences of its consumers’ palates.   Kolber tells viewers to trust their instincts when tasting and purchasing wine, and not to be too influenced or intimidated by more practiced wine aficionados. “Even experts make mistakes now and again,” says Kolber. “So here’s a ‘LoCA thought’ - see what pleases your palate, not somebody else’s.”   Kolber’s disarming persona illustrates the Lodi region’s mission to educate budding wine enthusiasts in an entertaining and engaging way. The clips are easy to digest for busy oenophiles and casual consumers alike, spanning from 30 seconds to one minute. Recent videos include paella pairings, perfect wines for tailgating aka “wine gating,” and a lesson on how to distinguish aromas and flavors in a wine.   Kolber is the owner of KG Vineyard Management, which is Certified Green under the Lodi Rules™ for Sustainable Winegrowing - California’s first 3rd party-certified sustainable winegrowing program. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, Kolber is an avid musician and a busy father to three young children.   “LoCA Thoughts” videos can be viewed at http://www.lodiwine.com/locathoughts/.   About Lodi Wine Country   Located south of Sacramento and west of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range, the Lodi wine region features over 100,000 acres of vineyards that thrive in the classic Mediterranean climate of warm days and cool evenings. With more than 75 varieties currently being cultivated, Lodi offers a diverse portfolio of wines. While long known as a superior producer of Zinfandel, including an estimated 2,000 acres of pre-Prohibition own rooted vines, the area also produces award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Chardonnay. More recently, Lodi has begun producing varietals such as Albariño, Tempranillo, Graciano and Vermentino, among many others. Lodi has been a major winegrape growing region since the 1850’s, and today is farmed by over 750 growers. The region also serves as home to more than 80 boutique wineries specializing in small-lot, handmade wines that have garnered major awards at domestic and international wine competitions.  In addition, Lodi is one of the leading wine regions in sustainable viticulture. Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP) and the Lodi Winegrape Commission to Introduce Lodi Native™ Project During The Lodi Zinfandel Experience, March 29 & 30, 2014

5 March, 2014

Lodi, CA– Later this month, Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP) and the Lodi Winegrape Commission will partner to showcase single vineyard Zinfandels and Lodi vintners’ contemporary winemaking style with this varietal wine at The Lodi Zinfandel Experience, set to take place on March 29 & 30, 2014. The experience will begin on Saturday and includes an educational seminar featuring the Lodi Native Group, escorted vineyard tours and wine tastings at the iconic Zinfandel sites of Soucie, Noma, and Marian’s Vineyards, and a winemaker reception and BBQ-themed dinner at Macchia Wines, catered by French 25, Stockton. On Sunday, event attendees are invited to explore seven Lodi wineries – each a member of ZAP – for exclusive opportunities to take part in barrel and vertical tastings of select Lodi Zinfandels. ZAP’s collaboration with the Lodi Winegrape Commission on The Lodi Zinfandel Experience is part of its ongoing commitment to education and support of regional Zinfandel programs. “We are delighted to be working with the growers and wineries of Lodi,” said Rebecca Robinson, ZAP Executive Director. “Lodi is an important growing region and we support the unique style of winemaking that is being championed by the Lodi Native Group. This grassroots effort is aligned with ZAP’s mission to further recognize Zinfandel’s importance and contribution to California winemaking,” she added. Presented publicly for the first time, Lodi Native™ is a collaborative project by like-minded Lodi winemakers Layne Montgomery (m2 Wines), Stuart Spencer (St.Amant Winery), Ryan Sherman (Fields Family Wines), Michael McCay (McCay Cellars), Tim Holdener (Macchia Wines), and Chad Joseph (winemaker for Maley Brothers and other Lodi wineries). The mission of the Lodi Native Group is simple: to turn the spotlight on the region’s heritage Zinfandel plantings – many of them dating back to the late 1800’s – through sensible viticulture and minimalist winemaking practices, beginning with native yeast fermentation and use of no new oak. The focus of the project is on Zinfandel, but on the taste of the vineyards rather than varietal character or brand. To learn more about the Lodi Native project, visit www.LodiNative.com. “We are excited about showcasing Lodi’s heritage and history with Zinfandel by welcoming guests to our region. Participants of The Lodi Zinfandel Experience will have the opportunity to meet some of our amazing winemakers, visit some of our fantastic vineyards and, of course, taste our world-class wines,” stated Camron King, Executive Director, Lodi Winegrape Commission. All-inclusive tickets for The Lodi Zinfandel Experience which include the Lodi Native Seminar, escorted vineyard tours, and barbecue dinner are $85 for members of ZAP and $95 for the public. LoCA Thoughts Explores the Unfrequented Side of Wine: California’s Lodi Wine Region introduces new video series aimed at debunking common myths about wine

23 April, 2013

Lodi, CA – The Lodi Winegrape Commission is pleased to introduce the launch of LoCA Thoughts, a new video series that demystifies wine, featuring local wine grape grower, Ben Kolber. Consistent with the region’s breakthrough promotional campaign – “LoCA – The Wines of Lodi, California” – which launched in September 2011, the video series will continue to highlight Lodi’s engaging approach to the world of wine. The LoCA Thoughts videos seek to challenge conventional myths about storing, pouring, tasting and cooking with wine, while providing consumers with fun, down-to-earth solutions to some of the most common wine-related questions such as: Is there a correct way to pour a glass of wine? Is it true that I should never chill a red wine? Do pricey bottles automatically mean a better wine? Serving up the answers and dishing out quirky wine tips is grower Ben Kolber, the official spokesman of the new LoCA Thoughts video series. “The LoCA Thoughts video series is all about taking the fear factor out of relating to wine and making it more accessible, exciting, and fun! says Ben Kolber. “When consumers see Lodi on a wine label, we want them to associate it with great quality and good times!” Kolber is the owner of KG Vineyard Management, one out of a select number of regional vineyard management companies, which is Certified Green under the Lodi Rules™ for Sustainable Winegrowing, California’s first 3rd party-certified sustainable winegrowing program. A graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston, with a Bachelors of Arts in Professional Music, Kolber is an avid musician, a lover of bacon-wrapped hotlinks paired with Lodi Barbera, and a busy father to three young children. Currently, there are three videos that can be viewed at www.lodiwine.com/locathoughts. A fourth video, titled “Gooseberry Bush?”, debuts today. Future plans for LoCA Thoughts videos involve a question and answer forum as well as consumer contests to choose a topic for future videos in the series. Lodi Winegrape Commission Introduces New Sustainable Vineyard Certification

28 January, 2013

Lodi Rules™ Raises the Bar   Lodi, CAThe Lodi Winegrape Commission is proud to announce Lodi Rules™ for Sustainable Winegrowing received its accreditation by Protected Harvest last week, thus raising the bar on vineyard certification. The original standards, approved in 2005, were California’s first appellation-wide sustainable winegrowing standards, which have now become a global benchmark for vineyard certification.   The revised guidelines culminate two years of work by Lodi wine growers to improve upon the original certification standards. The revision includes 22 new measures that address issues such as energy management, employee incentives and benefits, soil conservation, water quality and disease management, among many others.  There are now 101 farming practice standards in six chapters: Business Management, Human Resources, Ecosystem Management, Soil Management, Water Management, and Pest Management.   All standards have been peer-reviewed by scientists, members of the academic community and environmental organizations before accreditation by Protected Harvest. Vineyards must pass a third-party audit to verify vineyard practices prior to certification.   “We are very proud of the rigor and quality these standards represent,” noted local grower and committee chairman, Stanton Lange. “They reflect Lodi’s generational commitment to responsible farming and give wine lovers the opportunity to support our efforts by enjoying a glass of Lodi Rules™ certified sustainable wine.”   In 2005, Protected Harvest certified six farming families and 1,455 acres in the Lodi Appellation.  Over the past seven years, the program has grown to over 85 farming operations, and 20,000 acres of Lodi vineyards have been certified. There are an additional 6,000 acres certified from Sonoma to Soledad. Over twenty wineries now produce wines that bear the Lodi Rules™ seal on the label.   “The Lodi Winegrape Commission continues to demonstrate leadership in sustainable winegrape growing by reevaluating farming standards for the Lodi Rules™ for Sustainable Winegrowing,” stated Dr. William Horwath, President of the Protected Harvest Board.  “The Board sent the standards out for scientific peer review, as well as reviewed them internally. They were very impressed with the rigor of the revisions by the Commission, the subsequent changes they made based on the reviews by the Board and scientists and their desire to keep the Lodi Rules™ up to date and relevant to the challenges that face this specific farming industry today. The Protected Harvest Board approved the standards revisions at their January 16 meeting.”   About Lodi Wine Country Located south of Sacramento and west of the Sierra Nevada, Lodi has been a major winegrape growing region since the 1850’s, and today is farmed by over 750 growers. Wine Competitions Showcase Lodi’s Diversity, Quality and Value

6 December, 2012

This year’s major wine competitions have been more than kind to wines from the Lodi region of Northern California, proving that Lodi wines compete with the best wines of the world and have been delivering outstanding results. Lodi’s abundant old vine Zinfandel vineyards make some of the region’s finest wines and, not surprisingly, many Lodi Zinfandels earned high marks from competition judges. Macchia- a single stand-out Zinfandel producer – was awarded six gold medals for six different 2010 Zinfandels across four separate wine competitions, including the San Francisco Chronicle and California State Fair competitions. Additionally, Oak Ridge Winery’s 2007 Moss Roxx Vineyard Zinfandel took a double gold medal at the California State Fair while Gnarly Head’s 2010 Old Vine Zinfandel  won a gold medal and best of class at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition and Consumer Wine Awards along with gold medals in five other competitions, from the Sunset Wine Competition to the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Although Lodi is best known for growing Zinfandel, the region also excels in other varietals. The 2010 Cycles Gladiator Cabernet Sauvignon won four gold medals throughout the year, including one from the San Francisco International Wine Competition. Cycles Gladiator’s 2009 and 2010 vintage Syrahs also earned a total of five gold medals and 3 silver medals from various competitions. An impressive number of other Lodi varietals took home multiple awards in 2012 wine competitions such as Spanish varietal specialist Bokisch Vineyards, who earned three gold medals for its 2009 Tempranillo. Some other accolades from Lodi include Harmony Wynelands’ 2010 Riverview Riesling, which was awarded Platinum at the Consumer Wine Awards. Michael David Winery’s 2010 Petite Petit was awarded Double Gold and Best of State at the California State Fair, and Toasted Toad Cellars 2010 Viognier was Best of Class and a Gold Medalist at the International Women’s Wine Competition. “Lodi is renowned for Zinfandel and many recognize Lodi for producing exceptionally flavorful wines at approachable prices, but we are also one of the most diverse regions in the world in terms of the number of varieties grown,” explains Camron King, Executive Director of the Lodi Winegrape Commission. “Lodi’s Mediterranean climate is well-suited to growing a broad array of grapes, from Rhone and Iberian reds to aromatic whites.” 2012 proved to showcase Lodi as a versatile and first-rate winegrowing region, receiving 177 gold medals out of a total of 313 awards.
