Heritage and Quality Beckons Chamisal Vineyards to its Original Moniker

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (February 23, 2009) The historic Chamisal property was the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley in 1973, and promptly drew acclaim for outstanding wines.  “The legacy and longstanding quality of the property inspired us to turn the clock back to its original namesake, Chamisal Vineyards,” said Erle Martin, President & Chief Executive Officer, Crimson Wine Group.

Known as Domaine Alfred from 1996 to 2008, the Crimson Wine Group announced the purchase of the legendary vineyard in August, 2008.  Day-to-day management of the winery continues to rest with the local team. “The vineyard has been consistently producing outstanding wines under the guidance of winemaker Fintan du Fresne and we are committed to guarding the distinction of the winery,” said Martin.

Much of the 80-acre vineyard was replanted in the early 90s under the previous owner, with a focus on high density spacing and a diverse clonal selection.  The property is planted mainly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as some Syrah, Grenache and Pinot Gris, showcasing 29 different clones of these varieties. “Everything we do in the vineyard and in our winemaking is about showcasing this special place, and we are pleased to honor its heritage by once again calling it Chamisal Vineyards,” said winemaker Fintan du Fresne.

The announcement was made as the winery gets ready to launch its newest releases under the  Chamisal label.  Chamisal Vineyards will continue their focus on the production of high end Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the estate, with the core priced from $24 to $60 a bottle.
