Murrieta's Well

About

Murrieta’s Well, celebrating 135 years of grape growing in 2019, is one of California’s original wine estates.  Its heritage was marked in 1884 when cuttings  were planted from famed French vineyards Chateau d’Yquem and Chateau Margaux.  The estate’s founder, Louis Mel, chose an ideal location where the Livermore Valley’s unique terroir aided by the cooling effect from the transverse orientation of the AVA provided an ideal setting for the cultivation of noble variety grapes.
One-hundred acres of windswept vineyards – derivative of both new plantings and the original Bordeaux cuttings – rest on loam-rich soils and are farmed block-by-block, giving winemaker Robbie Meyer a distinct palette of varieties  from which to craft his wines. His philosophy is to focus on single varieties, farm and ferment them separately, and create the estate’s signature blends barrel by barrel – “The Whip” and “The Spur.” The estate’s portfolio also includes cabernet franc, malbec, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, dry rosé, sauvignon blanc and more.

Robbie Meyer – Director of Winemaking
A native of Murrieta, Georgia, Robbie’s first wine-related position came when, at the age of eighteen, he was appointed wine steward at a local restaurant. After graduating from the University of Georgia, Robbie followed his passion for wine to California. There, he received his Master’s Degree in Enology from the University of California at Davis and quickly gained experience at some of the finest wineries in the state. Vintages at Peter Michael Winery in Sonoma, Lewis Cellars in Napa Valley, and L’Angevin near the Russian River exposed Meyer to the some of the most influential terroirs in the world. His love of history, viticulture and unique terroirs, make him the perfect fit for Murrieta’s Well. “I love the sense of history the winery carries,” said Robbie, “This property has been around for more than a century and having the opportunity to work on this estate is literally like being a part of California wine history.”
